River Cottage Cycling Holidays

Why here?

River Cottage is an ideal location for a cycling holiday. From relatively easy rides along beautiful alpine valleys in search of scenic destinations like the fairytale lakes of Bled and Bohinj, to lung-busting high mountain road passes - some of which can be crossed into nearby Italy & Austria - there are routes for cycling enthusiasts at distances ranging from 30km to 200km. The mountainous terrain makes River Cottage an ideal base for a training week for racing and cyclesportive/randonnée riders.
We would like to share the fantastic cycling experiences of this spectacular region with you; we offer accommodation, breakfast, afternoon tea and cake, airport pick-up, route suggestions and maps.

Accommodation and Food

We can comfortably accommodate four cyclists at River Cottage, but for larger groups we recommend other local guest house accommodation, which we can arrange for you.

Roy does a great cyclist's breakfast at a time to suit you, and Justi will be ready with home-baked cake when you return in the afternoon. We can recommend good places to stop for lunch and snacks on your way, and for the evening meal there is a farm restaurant/bar right next door to River Cottage where tasty, reasonably priced, wholesome meals can be chosen from an extensive menu. For variety, two pizzerias, a traditional Slovene inn and a more up-market restaurant are within easy distance of River Cottage


Come for a week , a long weekend or even a mid-week stay, with regular flights from Stansted to Ljubljana with Easyjet or Luton to Ljubljana with Wizzair. We will arrange transfer from the airport to River Cottage for you, your luggage and your bike with a local minibus service.


Normally cyclists will want to ride these routes on their own bikes. We have bike parking space under our large car port (bring your chain/lock of choice though we can lend you one if you are travelling light). MTB hire is available nearby and if you let us know beforehand we will reserve a bike for you.


Choose from a selection of routes from an easy level ride along the cycle track to the outdoor resort town of Kranjska Gora (32km/20 miles), a visit to the medieval town centre of Radovlijca (60km/37 miles), or longer road routes with options of 60km/37 miles to 200km/124 miles or more that will take you over Alpine passes into Italy or Austria and back into Slovenia
Our suggested routes are currently road and cycle track biased, though we do include a couple of options for road or touring bikes that can deal with some "rough stuff". A good example of this would be the scenic "back road" to Lake Bled that involves an 11km/7mile section of unsurfaced road.


Although some routes are relatively easy, this is an alpine area and almost all routes involve climbing. To get the most from your holiday, we suggest you make sure you are cycling-fit and able to cover the distances before you come!

Off the bike

Roy & Justi have written three Cicerone guidebooks to the mountains and trails of Slovenia and contributed to others, and would be happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm of the local hills. This stunning area is full of opportunities for walking, rock-climbing, photography, painting, and excursions to other places of interest in Slovenia, including spectacular caves, medieval towns, and the capital, Ljubljana, which are perfect for a day off the bike or for non-cycling partners or friends.
Note: Insurance

Cycling, like most outdoor physical activities, has its share of objective and inherent dangers. The routes are selected to be mostly on minor roads and cycle tracks, but some busier roads are inevitable and accidents can happen anywhere. Ensure that you take out appropriate insurance cover, which includes cycling as an activity, before leaving for your holiday. Choose your routes with care, considering the fitness and ability of the whole group; we can take no responsibility for accidents, howsoever caused.
